Chapter President’s Message – May 2008
Dana K. Worthington, ASLA

To my fellow Florida Chapter members,
It is important that we thank Richard Rome for his service to our organization, most recently as our President. He has given untold hours of his personal time to this Chapter over the course of many, many years. We wish him well with his health now and long into the future.

Thank you, not only for voting for me last Spring, but also for your most recent phone calls and emails of encouragement and support. I did not expect to step into the Presidency until October, but am able and willing to take on the challenge early as your Executive Committee has asked me to do.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of three initiatives that I put forth while running for office and encourage you to help me see them through to completion.

Initiative: Lead the effort to engage each and every one of our members to give just four hours of their time each year. That?s only one hour per quarter, towards a Florida Chapter/section event, activity or initiative.
Update: Not only do we need members to volunteer locally (contact your Section Chair), but also at the State level. If you are interested in being appointed to one of the following committees, please let me know. Your help and input is needed!

- Membership Development, Public Relations, Sponsorship, Leadership Development, Strategic Planning, Emerging Professionals and HALS (Historic American Landscapes Survey)

Initiative: Lead the development of and fund-raising for an educational brochure that will encourage membership through information on licensure, sign & seal legislation, the Board of Landscape Architects, the FLACCE (Friends of Landscape Architecture Committee of Continuous Existence) and the Florida Chapter ASLA.

Update: This effort is in need of a small group of volunteers. Please let me know if you are interested.

Initiative: Lead the drive to research the number of municipalities that currently require a Landscape Architect to sign & seal; enlist volunteers to petition additional municipalities with the goal of a 10% increase per year until we have 100% compliance.

Update: Thanks to Pam King, FAMU MLA student, who is researching this topic for the Florida Chapter. Soon we will ask for volunteers to petition their municipalities.

In April, I travelled to Tallahassee to participate in the recognition of National Landscape Architecture Month. Representative Chris Dorworth (R), District 34 (portions of Orange and Seminole Counties), brought a Resolution to the House floor for us and, that same day, Shawn Kalbli, your Tallahassee Section Chair, organized a Landscape Architecture display in the entry of the Capitol. Many members of the Section were at the display throughout the day greeting legislators and educating them about Landscape Architecture.

The first week of May I will travel to Washington, D.C. along with Jeff Caster, your Trustee, and Sue Fern, your Association Manager, to represent you at the National ASLA Chapter Presidents Council and Board of Trustee meetings. Jeff and I will update you on this trip in the June NewsLine.

Lastly, our Annual Conference & Expo is quickly approaching. The Conference Committee, led by Mary Bates and Michael Kidde, is working tirelessly to plan an excellent conference for you. I hope you take advantage of their efforts and look forward to seeing you July 31 - August 2, 2008 in Jacksonville.

Sincerely,
Dana K. Worthington, RLA, ASLA
