Florida A&M University Student Chapter Celebrates Landscape Architecture Month
The FAMU Student Chapter ASLA celebrated Landscape Architecture month during the week of April 6th-10th with a full week of events and presentations. The "kick-off" for the week's activities was the opening of a display of landscape architecture student work in the entrance foyer of the School of Architecture. The display highlighted various class and studio work from all levels of the MLA Program from 1st year through 3rd year. In addition, on Monday, they hosted a, Standing Room Only, Campus Planning presentation by Pete Sechler with one of Orlando’s largest landscape architecture and planning firms, Glatting, Jackson, Kercher & Anglin.
On Tuesday, the University of Florida’s John Beaty delivered a presentation to students in all programs in the School of Architecture about the hands-on opportunities offered through UF’s Field School. Last summer, FAMU SOA students participated in the on-site historic restoration program in New Orleans. Wednesday, the founder of Land F/X, Jeremiah Farmer, visited the school from his offices in California in order to provide a powerful 2-hour presentation on the benefits and technological advantages that Land F/X provides to the landscape architecture profession.
Thursday brought a 4-hour irrigation workshop from Hunter Industries' representative, Brian Walker. Students were given an intensive introductory course in the fundamentals of irrigation design and each student in attendance was provided with a large reference binder for future use. As the weeklong events wrapped up, the Landscape Architecture studio held an "open house" for students throughout the University which was highlighted by a Photoshop presentation by C.L. Bohannon, one of the MLA Programs assistant professors.
Overall, the week-long celebration of landscape architecture at the school was considered to everyone who attended as a huge success, and many faculty and students commended the student leaders for the best celebration since the start of the Student Chapter in the ten year history of the Program. The student chapter hopes to continue to establish this event as an annual occurrence with increased support of the area's professionals and firms. As one participant commented, "It was nothing short of great for landscape architecture!"

Opportunities for 2009 Committee Service
President Dana Worthington, ASLA, continues to consider appointments for committee service during her term as FLASLA president. To volunteer for service on one or more of the committees listed on the attached file, please contact Dana indicating the group(s) of interest to you. A few brief comments on your interests and experience would be helpful as well, but professional commitment and the desire to contribute through FLASLA committee service is all that is required.
FLASLA committees support Executive Committee-approved programmatic goals and objectives by: (1) performing specific functions; or (2) providing member expertise and input on issues and programs.
Committee chairs direct the activities of the group in coordination with our Association Manger, Sue Fern, and in accordance with the board-approved Annual Operating Plan and the committee charge. The Members At Large are responsible for coordinating the activities of committees, including committee communications, and work with the chairs to set agendas. The frequency of committee conference calls, meetings, and correspondence depends on the nature of the committee’s work. The FLASLA Members At Large serve as Executive Committee liaisons to the committees and are available to assist the committees and committee chairs as needed. Terms of service are one year, unless otherwise specified, and begin and end when the president assumes office at the conclusion of the annual meeting.
